What Is the Difference Between a Tape Converter and a Tape Distributor?
A tape distributor resells premade rolls of tape exactly as they come from the manufacturer — same width, same length, same construction. What Value-Added Converting Services Does SpecTape Offer?
SpecTape offers a full suite of in-house converting services including unwind/rewind slitting, baloney (lathe) slitting, razor and score knife slitting, spool winding, rotary die cutting, laminating, perforating, narrow-width converting, long-length converting, and tight-tolerance slitting to ±1/32″ — all performed at our Erlanger, KY facility.
Precision Slitting
Unwind/rewind, baloney, razor, and score knife slitting to ±1/32″ tolerance. Narrowest width: 5mm. Multiple slitting methods matched to your material type.
Rotary Die Cutting
Custom die-cut shapes and parts on a variety of presses with made-to-order tooling. Ideal for gaskets, labels, custom parts, and assembly components.
Laminating
Bond non-adhesive materials to PSAs or laminate two to three adhesives together to create entirely custom tape constructions.
Spool Winding
Traverse-wound spools up to 20,000 FT for long machine-run applications that require minimal changeover. 1/4″ to 1″ widths, 3″ or 6″ ID cores, up to 17″ OD.
Perforating
Skip-slit lengthwise or perforate across the web for easy-tear and dispensing applications.
Custom Features
Lift edges, extended liners, and other application-specific features added to make tape easier to use in the field or on the production line.
Why Would a Customer Need Custom Converted Tape Instead of Off-the-Shelf?
Buying off the shelf does not guarantee a product works for a particular application. Custom converting allows SpecTape to recommend more specific adhesives, add features like lift edges or extended liners for easier field application, or die cut tape to exact shapes that fit a customer’s specific manufacturing or assembly process.

The standard width doesn’t fit their process
A 2″ roll might be close, but their application needs exactly 38mm. SpecTape slits to any width down to 5mm with ±1/32″ tolerance.

Real-World Example
A large manufacturer was using a differential tape — permanent adhesive on one side, removable adhesive on the other — for core starting, roll tabbing, and shipping with their finished product to end users. The problem: differential tapes typically come with the permanent adhesive on the exposed side and the removable adhesive on the liner side, which was creating confusion for the manufacturer’s customers who needed to work with the removable side first.
SpecTape solved it through converting. By reverse winding the jumbo rolls and slitting to the exact widths required, we changed the configuration of the tape entirely — so that the removable adhesive was now the exposed side, exactly as the end user needed it. No product change, no new adhesive chemistry, no engineering project. Just a converter who understood that jumbo format rolls often aren’t in customer-preferred format — and knew how to fix that.
